Letting out yet another heavy sigh, Mine hurried through the bustling streets toward the store. Strangely, she did not look and smile at the passing people, giving her odd looks as she drifted through their midsts. She did not, as she usually did, beam at complete strangers who were gawking at her maid's outfit, greeting them with a wave and her characteristic tinkling laugh. Instead, she trudged along, dragging her feet. Her heavy braids still, not bobbing up and down to mirror her usual sparkling excitement. No, not today. Today she was pondering an odd incident that had happened earlier that afternoon. The steady wave of customers had subsided, so she and Boss had taken the time for a bit of relaxation. They had talked about many things, and the conversation had been slow and easy. Gradually, she had let her head fall down on Boss's shoulder. As soon as she touched him, Boss had jumped, up pushing Mine away from him. He stammered incoherent words, which was very unusual. Mine had been hurt and devastated. Boss apologized and gave her a rather forced smile. For the rest of the day he was preoccupied and quiet. Mine didn't understand. Why had he pushed her away? She had thought Boss cared about her. She, for one, cared about him more than anything. Her heart belonged to Boss. Clearly, he didn't feel the same way. But she couldn't help it. Boss was just too wonderful. He was funny and extravagant, glamorous and unique, yet she knew that there was a part of him that was wounded and lost. She wanted to heal that wounded piece of him. She wanted to hold him and comfort him. But Boss had not allowed that. Why couldn't she hold him and love him? Was Boss hiding something? Shaking her head sadly, Mine drifted through the crowd, seeing nobody and hearing nothing.
